The most popular landmark and souvenir is the "Dodo". Until 1638 Mauritius was an undeveloped and unpopulated island. The unique Dodo did not have enemies and there was no reason for him to fear his existence. In 1638 the Dutch occupied this island, and the Dodo was found in many dishes. 1681 the last Dodo was seen.

One of the main attractions in Port- Louis in the Natural History Museum is a rare specimen of the Dodo's complete skeleton.
